Poker Tournaments For Women - Major Event Announced!

by pkr grl, May 19, 2009 at 12:32 am | no comments.

Poker tournaments for women don’t come up often due to the comparatively low number of women in poker (this is the part where I urge all you ladies to get more involved in the sport so we can have more competitions), so when a major event is announced, it’s BIG news. Today PartyPoker.com made my day by revealing the dates for the third Women’s World Open which is to be held in London next week.

The $3,000 buy-in event made possible by Matchroom Sport will see 36 of the top female poker players, including defending champion Soraya Homam and 2008 final table players May Maceiras and Stefanie Bergener, compete for the $108,000 prize pool consisting of a $50,000 top prize. The event will be one of the few poker tournaments for women to be held in front of the camera, which should suit 1994 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress nominee Jennifer Tilly. However, this could be bad news for the television tournament newbie Annette Obrestad who is interested to see if having a camera in the room modifies the style of play, but who also hopes to see some catfights first hand. I say be careful what you wish for Annette.

Hot Poker Action Starts May 24

The Women’s World Open III tournament will be held at London’s Three Mills Studios from 24 – 27 May 2009 and will feature a seven player final table made up of the 6 heat winners, and the winner of the runner-up heat. We can expect to see all the action broadcast in the UK soon after the tournament, but for those of us on the other side of the world, we will just have to wait to see the women of poker battling it out in London.
